The Somfy Dexxo Smart io is the operator on my garage door: a ceiling-mounted unit with a rail, a carriage that grabs the door arm, and a motor head that holds the radio and the programming buttons. It speaks io-homecontrol, the same two-way protocol as the blinds in this house, which is why it can sit on the Somfy TaHoma Switch without a second bridge. This page collects the manufacturer's numbers and the limits worth checking before you order. The pairing order is in the step-by-step garage door walkthrough.

What Does the Dexxo Smart io Actually Do?

Somfy calls it a drive for standard garage doors. Installers call it an opener. Either way it's the same box. According to Somfy's product page it takes belt and chain rails, reports back over two-way radio, and adds automatic closing, a pedestrian or ventilation opening, integrated LED lighting, automatic obstacle detection and a manual release for power failures.

The installation instructions cover three door types: up-and-over, sectional and side doors. Three versions exist, an 800 io, a 1000 io and a 1000 io with a backup battery, and every one ships with two Keygo 4 io remotes.

Will Your Door Fit Under the Limits?

Measure before you order, because the limit that bites is rarely the one people check. Somfy lists 10 m2 of door surface. A 4750 by 2100 mm sectional door is 9.975 m2, a margin of a quarter of a percent. Width times height of the leaf is the figure that counts, not the width of the opening.

Surface runs out before weight on modern insulated sectional doors. Weight is the constraint on old timber doors. If your door lands within a few percent of 10 m2, get the leaf area from the door manufacturer instead of a tape measure.

Headroom and Clearances

The spec sheet won't tell you whether the hardware physically fits, so measure three more things. The instructions define the distance between the highest point of the door and the ceiling. With 35 to 200 mm the unit mounts straight to the ceiling, and above 200 mm it needs a mounting height between 10 and 245 mm. Then check side clearance and garage depth against the rail length listed in the manual.

Garage depth is the quiet second trap. The depth has to hold the open door leaf, the rail and a person standing beside them. Add the leaf travel yourself and see what's left before choosing the longer rail.

That 7 W standby figure is the one to argue with. Running around the clock it adds up to roughly 61 kWh a year. Multiply by your own tariff before deciding whether that matters; across a house full of standby loads it does.

IP 20 means protected against fingers and nothing against water. It's fine for a unit bolted to a garage ceiling. The 100 m open-field range deserves the usual skepticism too, since a garage door sits behind at least one wall, so plan where the hub goes instead of trusting the figure.

How Do You Pair It With TaHoma Switch?

Commission the motor first. Somfy's instructions call auto-learning a mandatory step, so the door should run end to end before a hub is anywhere near it. Only then does the hub side take minutes:

  1. Set the travel limits on the motor head and run the door end to end from a Keygo io remote, with no hub involved.
  2. Put the motor head into radio programming mode with PROG, following the manual for your variant.
  3. In the TaHoma app, add a device, choose io-homecontrol and let the hub scan.
  4. Name the door something a person would say out loud.
  5. Test open, stop and close while you can see the door.

Because io-homecontrol is two-way, the hub doesn't just fire commands into the air the way RTS does. It gets a state back, so the app knows whether the door is actually open. That's the whole argument for io over RTS on a garage door. A blind that ignores a command is annoying. A door you believe is shut when it isn't is a different category of problem.

The Calibration Trap

Pair first and calibrate later, and you can end up with a tile in the app that looks ready over a door that ignores it. The hub knows the radio link is up and nothing more, so there's no error to read. The fix sits at the motor: run auto-learning again, then test from the remote before touching the app. The walkthrough linked above has a symptom table for this.

What Home Assistant Sees

Home Assistant reaches the door through the official Overkiz integration pointed at the TaHoma hub. The door appears as a cover entity with open, close, stop and a state. No Home Assistant radio speaks io-homecontrol directly, so the hub stays in the chain whether you like it or not. In this house the hub isn't connected to Home Assistant yet; the integration is the plan, not the present.

What the connection would add is cross-system behavior the Somfy app can't do alone:

  • Door left open for 15 minutes after dark sends a notification
  • Closing the door can trigger a scene
  • Heating in the garage stays off while the door reports open

Is the Dexxo Smart io Worth It?

A gate or garage door is the category where I pay for the brand on purpose. It's a couple of hundred kilos of moving metal on a path used every day, and a failure there can hurt someone, not just annoy them. Photocells that fail safe, obstacle detection that reverses, and a drive that behaves the same on the two-thousandth cycle as on the first are what the extra money buys.

If the house already runs Somfy on io-homecontrol, this is the obvious operator. If you have no Somfy hardware at all, a generic operator with a dry-contact input plus a cheap Zigbee relay and a door sensor gets you into Home Assistant for less, and it puts nothing proprietary in the middle. You'd give up the two-way state and the five-year warranty. Which side of that trade you land on depends on what's already screwed to your walls.

If the door is the only way into the garage, add a way to release the door from outside, and consider the battery version. A release cord in the dark is a poor plan B.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size garage door can the Dexxo Smart io handle?

Somfy's product page lists a door surface of 10 m2 and a 200 kg figure in the weight row. Surface is the number that runs out first on most sectional doors. A 4750 by 2100 mm door works out to 9.975 m2, which clears the limit by 0.25 percent, so measure the leaf before you order.

Does the Dexxo Smart io need a TaHoma hub?

No. The operator runs on its own with the two Keygo 4 io remotes in the box, and Somfy's instructions make auto-learning of the door travel a mandatory commissioning step. A TaHoma Switch is only needed for app control, scenes, or exposing the door to Google Home and Home Assistant.

Can Home Assistant control a Dexxo Smart io?

Through the official Overkiz integration talking to a TaHoma hub, yes. The door arrives as a cover entity with open, close and stop. There is no direct io-homecontrol radio for Home Assistant, so the hub stays in the path. In this house the TaHoma hub is not connected to Home Assistant yet, so treat that route as documented, not as a daily-driver setup.

What is the difference between Dexxo Smart 800 io and 1000 io?

Somfy sells three versions: an 800 io, a 1000 io, and a 1000 io with a backup battery. Each ships with two Keygo 4 io remotes, and the installation instructions cover the 800 and 1000 together. The product page does not break the door limits out per version, so read the table in the manual for your door before choosing.

Does the garage door still open during a power cut?

Somfy lists manual release during a power failure as a feature, and the installation instructions describe a release device inside the garage. If the garage door is the only way into the garage, the instructions call for an external release device as well. The 1000 io with backup battery is the version to look at if you want motor power during an outage.
