The Somfy Keygo io is a four-channel io-homecontrol keyfob, 90 by 65 by 21 mm, and it comes as a pair in the box with the Somfy Dexxo Smart io garage operator I use. It's the one transmitter in the system that keeps working when the hub, the router or the phone doesn't, which is the reason it stays on the car keys.

What Is the Keygo io For?

Four buttons, four channels, one job: send a command. It runs on 868.950 MHz using io-homecontrol, with a stated range of 200 m in open field. That's the best case, so test it from the spot where you will actually press the button. Somfy lists gates and garage doors as the applications, and the manual adds lights and awnings as examples of the four devices it can drive.

Three interchangeable colored caps fit the central button. That sounds like packaging filler until you're trying to find the gate channel by feel in a dark car. Color plus a raised cap beats counting button positions.

What Comes in the Box

Somfy's page lists one remote, three button overlays and a user manual for the standalone product. The Dexxo Smart io ships with two remotes, so a third is worth buying only if you have more than two people or more than two cars. Storing a new remote is done at the motor, or by copying a button from a remote that's already stored. Adding one later therefore means walking to the garage.

A few practical notes follow from the table. The 200 m figure is a best case measured in open field, and a typical garage door sits behind a wall, so expect noticeably less in daily use. The CR2430 cell is the part you will eventually replace, and Somfy's manual points to the indicator light as the check: if it stays dark when you press a button, the battery is flat. Keep a spare in the glove box instead of finding out at the gate.

IP 30 means protection against objects larger than 2.5 mm and no protection against water, so the keyfob is a pocket device, not a weatherproof one. It also isn't to be confused with the Keygo RTS, which looks the same and speaks a different radio protocol. Check the label before you order a spare.

What the Keygo io Cannot Do

This is the part worth reading twice, because it's where people buy the wrong remote. Somfy's manual describes the control as sequential: the same button cycles Open, Stop, Close, Stop, Open. On a garage door that's exactly right, since a door has two ends and a stop in between, and one button covers all three.

The catch shows up on shutters. A cycling button gives you no direct route to an intermediate position, and retail listings that quote Somfy's description say plainly that the remote can't set motors or receivers and isn't compatible with every type of io motor. I couldn't confirm that wording on a Somfy page today, so read the manual of the motor you actually own. For a shutter, that manual names the transmitter you need for travel limits and the my position.

If you were planning to commission a shutter motor with the keyfob that came with your garage door, assume it won't work and check first.

Does the Keygo io Replace a Hub?

No, and a hub doesn't replace it either. Both register to the motor as io-homecontrol transmitters, so a press on the keyfob and a tap in the app are the same class of event to the door. Neither is the master.

The TaHoma Switch adds what a fob cannot: scenes, schedules, remote access, and exposure to Google Home and, through the Overkiz integration, to a local Home Assistant install. If you want the door to close itself at midnight, that logic lives in the hub. In this house the hub isn't connected to Home Assistant yet, so that part is the plan.

What the keyfob adds is everything continuing to work when the hub is not there. Two transmitters with different failure modes beat one transmitter with a good one.

What Still Works With Everything Unplugged

Three situations come up more often than people expect:

  • The router is rebooting, or the internet is down at your provider
  • The hub is unplugged during work in the rack
  • The phone is dead, in a coat, or in the house you're trying to get into

A smart home that can only be operated by a charged phone isn't a smart home; it's a single point of failure with an app. Keep a physical transmitter for anything that stands between you and the outside.

Is the Keygo io Worth Buying Separately?

If it came with your operator, use it and buy a spare CR2430. That's the whole decision.

If you're buying one on its own, ask what it will control. As a four-channel opener for gates, garage doors and io lighting, it's well made and five years of warranty on a keyfob is generous. As a general-purpose Somfy remote, probably not. The sequential control makes it the wrong tool for shutters, and that money is better spent on the transmitter your motor's manual recommends. Would I have liked the limits printed on the box? Yes. They aren't, and it costs people an afternoon.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Keygo io program a Somfy motor?

Treat it as a pure transmitter. Somfy's manual describes two ways to store the remote, from the motor interface or control unit, or by copying a button from a remote that is already stored. Retail listings that quote Somfy's description add that it cannot be used to set motors or receivers. Travel limits belong to the motor's own procedure.

Will the Keygo io control my roller shutters?

Possibly, with a catch. Somfy's manual says successive presses of one button give Open, Stop, Close, Stop and Open again, and that the other operating modes are described in the motor's own manual. On a garage operator that cycle is the whole vocabulary. On a shutter you lose direct access to the my position, so check the motor's manual first.

What battery does the Keygo io use?

One CR2430 lithium coin cell. It is thicker than the CR2032 most people keep in a drawer, so buy a spare when you buy the remote. According to the manual, an LED that does not light when you press a button means the battery is flat.

Does the Keygo io work with a TaHoma hub?

Somfy's product page lists the TaHoma Switch as compatible. Both the remote and the hub are io-homecontrol transmitters for the same motor, so either can drive the door, and the remote keeps working with the hub unplugged.

How many devices can one Keygo io control?

Up to four, one per channel. The manual gives a gate, a garage door, a light and an awning as examples. Somfy supplies three interchangeable colored caps for the central button, so you can tell channels apart by color and feel instead of counting positions in the dark.
