The Aqara Smart Lock U400 is the first residential smart lock to combine Ultra-Wideband (UWB) proximity detection with Matter over Thread certification, aiming at hands-free entry without cameras, biometric databases, or manual interaction. This review is built on Aqara's documentation and the published behaviour of the UWB and Aliro standards, not on a lock hanging in my own door. I should say plainly where my setup stops: I don't own a smart lock of any kind. My doors are covered by a wired Satel alarm that reports into Home Assistant through an Ethernet module and the satel_integra integration, and the only motorised opening in the house is a Somfy Dexxo Smart io garage door running on TaHoma. That's an installer-grade security layer with no electronic entry on the front door at all, which is a deliberate boundary rather than an oversight. The interesting part of the U400's design is that it doesn't merely notice proximity: it measures position and approach angle from UWB radio signals, so it can act as you reach the door instead of when you're still on the path.

How UWB Hands-Free Entry Works

Ultra-Wideband technology transmits short radio pulses across a wide frequency spectrum, enabling centimeter-level distance and angle measurement. This proximity-based approach lets the U400 distinguish whether you're approaching the front door versus standing near it inside the house - preventing false unlocks when you're in your living room.

The pairing path today runs through Apple Home on a UWB-capable iPhone, and the unlock is designed to fire at roughly 1.5 meters when the approach comes from outside. I have to flag something here rather than gloss over it: despite owning Apple hardware, I have never paired anything to Apple Home, so this section is documentation rather than lived experience. As an Aliro-enabled lock, UWB is due to extend to non-Apple devices in a later firmware release, following the CSA's Aliro standard for digital keys.

UWB through-door accuracy: UWB radio signals penetrate standard residential doors (wood, metal) at close range. The U400 uses Time Difference of Arrival (TDoA) across three antennas to calculate both distance (accurate to approximately 10 cm at 5 m range) and the angle of the signal source. An iPhone standing 0.5 m inside the door registers at roughly 90 degrees from the door plane, while an approaching visitor registers at 0-30 degrees. The lock uses that angle to work out which side of the door you're on, not just how close you are. Whether the angle discrimination holds up against a real door with a metal frame is the question I'd put to anyone who has one fitted.

The Apple ecosystem delivers the full UWB experience today. Matter provides a standardized interface that survives ecosystem transitions - if you switch from Apple to Google Home in two years, the lock doesn't need replacing.

Through Home Assistant a lock event can drive whatever else you run: hallway lights, an alarm partition, a log of who came in and when. I can't tell you how the U400 behaves in that chain, because there's no smart lock on my door at all. What I can tell you is what sits on the other end of it here. The alarm is a wired Satel system, installer-grade rather than consumer, bolted into Home Assistant through an Ethernet module and the satel_integra integration. That's the thing a lock event would disarm, and it's a very different animal from a consumer alarm you unbox and stick to a wall.

Who Benefits Most from the Aqara U400?

Households with several people coming and going: everyone registers a fingerprint and gets their own virtual key, and UWB opens the door before anyone reaches for a handle. Guest codes that expire on a schedule handle cleaners and deliveries without a key handoff.

A word on where this stops being theory for me. The only remotely operated way into my property is the garage door, a Somfy Dexxo Smart io running through a TaHoma Switch that I have deliberately kept off Home Assistant. A driveway gate motor is on the plan and not yet installed. So the whole hands-free-entry idea is one I've thought about hard and haven't bought into yet, and I'd rather say that than review a lock I've never turned.

Key limitations worth considering: UWB hands-free unlock currently requires Apple devices, and while Aliro promises broader compatibility, that depends on future firmware and ecosystem adoption. The lock requires a Thread border router for Matter operation - if you don't have a HomePod mini or Apple TV 4K already, factor that into the cost. Battery life of six months is excellent, and the USB-C emergency charging eliminates the lockout risk that plagues other battery-powered locks.

The rekeyable cylinder means you can rekey the physical backup without replacing the entire lock - a practical detail that most smart locks overlook. At its price point, the U400 competes directly with the Schlage Encode Plus and Level Lock+, offering stronger ecosystem breadth but requiring the Aliro/UWB hardware investment to unlock its headline feature.
