eufy Smart Lock C220: Wi-Fi Fingerprint Deadbolt Specs

What the C220 is

The eufy Smart Lock C220 is a Wi-Fi deadbolt you fit over a standard US or Canadian door. It connects straight to your router, so there's no bridge or hub, and eufy says it isn't compatible with HomeBase or any Wi-Fi bridge. Eufy lists the price at $169.99, rates it IP53 and ANSI/BHMA Grade 3, and quotes about eight months on eight AA batteries. Those are the specs that matter most.

How you get in

Eufy lists six methods, though one retailer counts five:

• Fingerprint (up to 50 prints). Eufy says recognition takes under a second, Verizon says under 1.5 s and another retailer says 0.3 s, so the claims don't agree.
• Touch keypad passcode (up to 100 passcodes), with an anti-peep feature.
• The eufy Security app, including remote lock and unlock.
• A physical key (two come in the box).
• Alexa or Google Assistant voice commands.
• Apple Watch.

Eufy's page doesn't mention Bluetooth proximity unlock. The app keeps an event history, and the lock sends an alert on an unusual opening attempt.

Build, weather and power

• Weather: IP53 (limited dust ingress, water spray up to 60 degrees from vertical), rated -22 F to 158 F (-30 C to 70 C).
• Grade: ANSI/BHMA Grade 3, the lowest of the three grades.
• Batteries: eight AA cells included, about eight months by eufy's figure, depending on use. The app warns at 20%.
• Emergency power: a USB-C port on the outside of the lock powers it for an emergency unlock. It can't charge the batteries. The key also works.
• Size: roughly 7.67 x 4.49 x 4.41 in and about 3.4 lb according to a retailer. Eufy doesn't state them on its page.

Installation

Eufy claims 15 minutes and no drilling. It fits most standard US and Canadian deadbolts, door thickness 35 to 55 mm, with the crossbore center more than 45 mm from the top of the handleset. It doesn't fit mortise locks. Measure before you order.

Smart home support

It works with Alexa and Google Assistant, and with eufy doorbells. It does not work with Apple HomeKit, IFTTT or Matter, per eufy's page. If you run Home Assistant on Matter or HomeKit, this is the wrong lock. Pair it with a camera such as the Eufy Video Doorbell E340 if you want a matched set. Apple Watch unlock is separate from HomeKit.

Eufy's page doesn't state the encryption, the lockout rule after wrong PINs or how long the log is kept, so I'm not quoting figures for them.

Check the ratings yourself

Retail ratings drift. One aggregator showed 4.4 stars from about 1,400 Amazon reviews, and Verizon showed 3.7 from 24. Recurring complaints are a finicky fingerprint sensor, and battery life that's hard to track. Read recent reviews on the listing you plan to buy from.

Who it suits

A rental host or a household that wants fingerprint and keypad entry without a hub, on a standard deadbolt door, and uses Alexa or Google. It's a poor fit for HomeKit homes, mortise doors, or anyone who wants a local-first Matter lock. Compare it with the Matter-over-Thread locks on this site, such as the Aqara Smart Lock U200.

Living with a battery-hungry deadbolt

Eight AA batteries is a lot of power, and it tells you something about this lock: Wi-Fi radios cost energy. A Bluetooth or Thread lock sips its batteries, while a Wi-Fi lock stays on your network and answers the app quickly. Eufy rates the packs at about eight months and warns that it depends on use. Heavy use shortens that, so I'd set a calendar reminder at six months rather than wait for the 20 percent warning.

If the batteries die, there are two fallbacks on Eufy's page: the physical key, and an emergency USB-C port on the outside that powers the lock for emergency use only. Keep a power bank in the car or by the door. It won't charge the batteries, so you still have to change them afterwards.

Setup in practice

Check three measurements before the box arrives. Door thickness must fall between 35 and 55 mm, and the distance from the crossbore center to the top of the handleset must be more than 45 mm. Eufy says the install takes about 15 minutes and a screwdriver, with no drilling. Add the lock in the eufy Security app, register the first fingerprints at the door and add passcodes afterwards.

The HomeKit and Matter gap

This is the hard limit. The lock doesn't speak HomeKit, IFTTT or Matter, per Eufy's page. In practice that means voice control through Alexa or Google Assistant and the eufy app for everything else. If you're building a local-first house around Home Assistant, a Matter lock is a safer long-term choice, and the Aqara U200 on this site is one example. If you're an Alexa household that wants a cheap keyless deadbolt without a hub, the C220's limits won't bother you.

Rental hosts and shared doors

Capacity is generous: Eufy says the lock stores up to 50 fingerprints and 100 passcodes, with two keys in the box. That's enough for a family and a handful of regular visitors, and it's the reason some small landlords like keypad locks, since a code can be deleted without cutting a key. Because the lock is Wi-Fi, you can manage those codes from anywhere. The trade-off is that your door now depends on your router and on Eufy's cloud, so I'd keep the key somewhere other than inside the house.
