A watch is the only screen already on your body when the smart home needs you. It is also a fourth ecosystem walking into a house that had settled on three. Both things are true.
Across 201 articles on this blog, not one of them treats a wearable as a place from which the house is controlled. That is a strange gap, because the watch is the only screen in the building guaranteed to be on your body at the moment something goes wrong, and the one surface that does not require finding, unlocking, or waiting for an app to load.
TL;DR: A watch is the fastest control surface in a smart home and the worst one for browsing it. Use it to fire decisions you already made and to receive alerts that cannot wait. The real cost is not battery or screen size, it is that the watch usually drags a fourth ecosystem into a house that had settled on three, and LTE is what decides whether the thing works when the phone is upstairs.
So this is the gap being filled, honestly, including the parts that are still unresolved here.

What Is Actually on the Wrist Here

Why the part number and not the marketing name? Because the case back is a fact and the marketing name would be a guess. The SM-L3xx designations span more than one model year, and pinning this exact unit to a specific product name is something I cannot do from the hardware alone. A blog that invents the easy version of that detail has told you something about how it handles the hard ones.
What matters more than the name: this is the fourth Samsung watch in a row on this wrist. That is a more useful signal than any review score, and for the same reason a repeat purchase always is. A score is one person's opinion on one week. Buying the same thing a fourth time is a verdict delivered with money, three times over, after the honeymoon ended each time.
Why the LTE Variant Is the Whole Argument
Paying extra for cellular on a watch reads like a luxury until you think about what home control actually requires.
A Bluetooth-only watch is a remote control for your phone. Everything it sends to the house goes through the handset in your pocket, which means the watch stops being useful the moment it leaves the phone behind. That is fine for notifications. It is useless for the actual use case, which is being at the far end of the garden, or in the shower, or getting into the car, without the phone.
An LTE watch has its own route to the internet and therefore its own route to the house. That is the difference between a wrist that can open a gate and a wrist that can tell you somebody rang the bell at a gate you now have to find your phone to open.
The Fourth Ecosystem Problem
Here is the part most wearable coverage skips entirely, and it is the part that actually costs you something.
This house runs on three things by deliberate choice: Home Assistant for the logic, Google Home for the household voice layer, and Somfy for everything motorized. Three platforms, chosen, with the top layer kept neutral on purpose.
A Samsung watch walks in with SmartThings. That is a fourth platform, with a fourth account, and its own opinions about where health and sensor data lives. The same problem exists in every brand: an Apple Watch brings HomeKit, a Pixel Watch brings Google Home, a Garmin brings Garmin. Buy a wearable and you are also buying a platform, whether you wanted one or not.
What That Actually Costs
Three things, in descending order of how much they should bother you.
- A data silo you did not choose. Health and sleep data goes to the vendor's platform first. Whether any of it reaches your own system depends entirely on what that vendor exposes.
- A second source of truth for presence. The watch tracks your location. So does the phone. If both feed automations, you get to debug which one was right at 2am.
- Another app the household has to learn. For a device only one person wears, this is minor. It is not nothing.
None of that makes the watch a bad purchase. It makes it a purchase with a platform attached, and the useful move is to decide in advance which functions you will let the vendor own and which you insist on getting back.
What Reaches Home Assistant, and What Does Not
The good news is better than it was a few years ago.
Home Assistant ships a Wear OS build of its Companion app, so a watch can carry tiles and complications that fire scripts and scenes directly. The Home Assistant Companion app documentation covers what a watch can and cannot do. That path does not involve the watch vendor's platform at all beyond the operating system, which is exactly the arrangement you want: the vendor supplies the hardware and the OS, and your own system supplies the logic.
SmartThings also has an official integration, so a Samsung watch's platform can be brought in rather than fenced off. Both paths exist. Which one you use decides whether your wrist is a client of your house or a client of somebody's cloud.
The Honest Unresolved Part
Two things about this specific setup I am not going to state as fact, because I have not confirmed them.
The first is which path the wrist control actually takes here, day to day: SmartThings, Google Home, or the Home Assistant Companion tile. All three are installed on phones in this house, and "it is possible" is not the same claim as "this is what happens".
The second is the source of the nightly temperature and humidity figures that show up alongside sleep data. That could be the watch's own sensors, or a sensor in the bedroom feeding the platform. Those two produce very different numbers and mean very different things, and I would rather say I do not know than pick the flattering one.
That is two open questions in an article about my own wrist, which is either embarrassing or the point. This blog has been busy this year removing invented specifics from posts that read more confidently than they had earned. Leaving the gaps visible is the same discipline pointed forward instead of backward.
Where the Wrist Wins
Strip away the platform politics and there is a real, narrow, genuinely excellent use case.
A watch is superb at firing a decision you already made. One tap, no unlock, no app launch, no waiting. Leaving the house and want everything off. Arriving and want the gate open before you reach it. Getting into bed and want the whole floor to go dark. These are not decisions you make at the moment of tapping, they are decisions you made months ago and encoded, and the watch is simply the fastest trigger in the building.
It is also the best possible place for an alert that cannot wait. A leak sensor firing at 3am does not need a rich interface. It needs to reach the one device that is physically attached to a sleeping person. A phone on a nightstand in silent mode does not do that job. A wrist does.
Where the Wrist Loses, Badly
Browsing. All of it.
A house with a few dozen Zigbee devices has a few hundred entities, and no amount of design makes that navigable on 44 mm of glass. Every attempt to put a full dashboard on a watch produces the same thing: a list you scroll past the useful item three times. If the action takes more than two taps on a watch, it does not belong on a watch. Put it on a phone, a wall panel, or, better, in an automation so nobody has to tap anything.
That is the rule I would give anyone setting this up, and it is more restrictive than the vendor demos suggest. Three to five actions, maximum, chosen because they are the ones you actually reach for. Everything else is clutter that makes the useful three harder to hit.
So Is It Worth Buying a Watch for This?
No, and that is worth saying plainly given that this whole article is about the use case.
Nobody should buy a smartwatch to control their house. The home control is a bonus on a device bought for fitness, notifications, or the simple fact that the previous one is three years old. It is a very good bonus, and on an LTE model it is the difference between a notification and an action, but it is not a reason.
What is worth deciding on purpose is the LTE question and the ecosystem question, because both are locked in at the moment of purchase and neither is fixable afterwards. Buy the Bluetooth model to save money and you have bought a watch that stops being useful the moment you walk away from your phone, which is precisely when you wanted it.
The fourth watch in a row says something about the hardware.
