The TP-Link Kasa Smart Plug EP10 is a compact single-outlet Wi-Fi smart plug that adds on/off scheduling and voice control to any standard US outlet. It requires no hub, connects to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, and integrates with Alexa, Google Home, and Samsung SmartThings. At around $10-13, it's one of the lowest-cost ways to make a dumb appliance smart.

I use Kasa plugs throughout my home for lamps, fans, and coffee makers. The EP10's reliability over 18 months of daily use has been excellent.

Setup in Under 5 Minutes

Plug it in, open the Kasa app, tap the plus button to add a device, and follow the prompts. The app walks you through connecting the plug to your Wi-Fi network. The whole process takes 3-5 minutes including the app download if you're new to Kasa.

One common snag: the EP10 only supports 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, not 5GHz. If your phone is currently on a 5GHz network, you'll need to temporarily switch to 2.4GHz during setup. This is a one-time step and doesn't affect how the plug works afterward.

Scheduling and Automation

The Kasa app supports schedules based on time and sunrise/sunset offsets. You can have a lamp turn on at sunset and off at 11 PM automatically. Away mode randomly toggles the connected device to simulate presence.

The EP10 also works as a target in Alexa routines and Google Home automations. If you say "Alexa, good morning," it can turn on the coffee maker plug as part of that routine. This is where smart plugs become genuinely useful rather than just a novelty.

Power Limit

The EP10 supports up to 15A / 1875W at 120V. That covers almost every household appliance: lamps, fans, small appliances, humidifiers, and most space heaters under 1500W. Don't use it with appliances that draw more than 1875W continuously - the plug will overheat and may trip.

Reliability

Kasa smart plugs have a strong reputation for reliability compared to cheaper alternatives. I've had zero dropouts in daily use. The local control feature (available on compatible setups) means automations can run without cloud dependency in some configurations. For standard schedules, the plug's internal timer runs independently of your internet connection.

The EP10 is the smart plug to recommend when someone asks for a cheap, reliable, no-nonsense option that actually works. Not the most feature-rich plug on the market, but it does its job well.
